Performance Task: To recycle or not to recycle: That is the Question!!
Time Frame: 2 days (120 minutes)
CCR Standards: Reading Anchor Standards 1 & 9, Writing Anchor Standards 1, 4, 6 & 8
Your assignment: You are the president of the Environmental Club at Rosemary Middle School. Some of your club members have suggested starting up a paper recycling project, but the rest of them think it's a bad idea. Mr. Cavaris wants a decision made as he will ask the PTA to support it if you agree to begin this project. You decide you need to research the pros and cons of this project before being the deciding voice.
You will read several articles that present both sides of the issue, view a video, and gather evidence in order to present your stance to the principal.
Steps you will be following: In order to plan and compose your speech to the principal, you will do all of the following:
1) Read several articles and watch a video from the Resources for #2 on the topic of recycling paper, taking notes* on these sources.
2) Use/create your own T-chart on the Resources for #2 page to list the pros and cons.
3) Organize your evidence, decide which side has the stronger argument, plan, and, using evidence to support your stance, write your speech to Mr. Cavaris.
*Notetaking: You may open a Word Document and take notes, or you may use scratch paper.
